India batter Shreyas Iyer is all set to feature for Mumbai in the semi-final of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024. As per the reports in the Times of India (TOI), it is learned that the batter has recovered from the back spasm and will be playing against Tamil Nadu.
The semifinal of the Ranji Trophy between Mumbai and Tamil Nadu will take place from March 2nd at Mumbai Cricket Association’s BKC ground. The return of Shreyas Iyer will be a big boost for the home team in the high-pressure game.
Shreyas Iyer was part of the Indian squad for the first two Tests against England. The batter couldn’t make a bigger impact with the bat in the series. He returned with scores of 35, 13, 27 & 29 in the first two Tests against England at Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. And after that, he wasn’t picked for the last three games. The batter had complained of back pain after the second game but there have been many speculations that he was dropped from the team.
Shreyas Iyer reportedly was then asked by the BCCI to feature in the Ranji Trophy but the batter complained of back pain. With now Mumbai eyeing another title in domestic cricket and set to play the semi-final, the India batter has told the state board that he is fit and will be playing for the team.
“Yes, lyer has confirmed to the Mumbai Cricket Association that he is fit now and available for Mumbai’s semi-final match,” a source Times of India.
The upcoming Ranji Trophy semi-final will be a great opportunity for Shreyas Iyer to return to form and reclaim his spot back in the Indian team. The batter for the last few years was a vital cog in the wheel but his recent performances raised quite a few eyebrows and ultimately led to his omission from Team India.
Shreyas Iyer would be eager to make an impact for the team in the Ranji Trophy. The batter looked in good touch in the series against England but he failed to convert the starts that he got. Therefore he would want to change that in the Ranji game.
BCCI gives warning to Shreyas Iyer for not playing domestic cricket
Shreyas Iyer of late has been a lot in the news. There were reports that suggested that after he told the Mumbai state team that he had back spasms, NCA stated that the batter was fit and had no issues. This raised a lot of speculations as it was learned that he wasn’t keen to play domestic cricket even though BCCI secretary Jay Shah had given a stern warning to players.
There also have been reports which suggested that BCCI is unhappy with Shreyas Iyer after he didn’t participate in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. The governing body has decided to terminate him from the national contract along with Ishan Kishan, who too didn’t play. With the batter now returning to the Ranji Trophy, it remains to be seen what will be his future with Team India.
