In a significant blow to Team India’s World Cup campaign, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the ongoing 2023 World Cup due to an ankle injury. Prasidh Krishna, a promising fast bowler, has been named as his replacement for the remainder of the tournament.
Pandya suffered an injury to his left ankle while bowling in India’s fourth league-stage match against Bangladesh in Pune. He was forced to leave the field due to a swollen ankle and couldn’t return to the game. In response to this setback, India made changes to their squad, bringing in Suryakumar Yadav as Pandya’s batting replacement and replacing Shardul Thakur with Mohammed Shami.
Pandya posted an emotional message after being ruled out of the squad. He is gutted to miss the World Cup 2023 but will be cheering team India. He thanked the wishes and support of everyone.
Hardik Pandya said
“Tough to digest the fact that I will miss out on the remaining part of the World Cup. I’ll be with the team, in spirit, cheering them on every ball of every game. Thanks for all the wishes, the love, and the support has been incredible. This team is special and I’m sure we’ll make everyone proud. Love, always, HP”
While there were initial hopes that Pandya might recover in time to play India’s final league-stage match against the Netherlands, he ultimately couldn’t regain fitness, prompting India to request ICC’s approval for a replacement. The event technical committee approved Prasidh Krishna as the replacement player.
Prasidh Krishna has featured in 17 ODIs for India and has scalped 29 wickets with an impressive average of 25.59. However, given the strong performances of India’s pace trio, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj, it remains to be seen whether Krishna will be included in the playing XI.
With this turn of events, India prepares to take on South Africa in their eighth league-stage match with their new-look squad, which aims to secure a spot in the World Cup knockout stage.
