‘I’d Have Laughed In Your Face…’- Eoin Morgan Shocked By England’s Performance In World Cup

Former England skipper Eoin Morgan has expressed his shock over England’s performance in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Entering the World Cup as reigning champions, England were considered one of the strongest contenders for the title. Widely regarded as one of the best ODI teams in recent years, having won the 2019 World Cup, they were expected to be the team to beat in the current competition. But almost a month into the World Cup England have become the team who are being beaten by everyone.

They began their title defense with a crushing 9-wicket loss at the hands of New Zealand. It looked like a one-off poor day and they proved it right by thrashing Bangladesh by 137 runs in their next outing. But things went south from the very next game onward. England lost against Afghanistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and India are now on the verge of being eliminated from the World Cup.

Eoin Morgan shocked:

The Jos Buttler-led side is currently languishing at the tenth spot in the points table with just 1 win in 6 games. Bangladesh are the only other side who have managed just 1 win in the competition so far. With three games left, England would be desperately hoping to avoid the wooden spoon and seal a place in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

As England continues to struggle in their first major ODI tournament without Eoin Morgan, the former captain has expressed his shock over their performance. He was the captain who revolutionized England’s ODI cricket and transformed them into the best side in the world after the disappointing campaign in the 2015 World Cup.

“If you had told me that on the flight over, that England would be sitting bottom of the tournament at this stage, I’d have laughed in your face. With this quality of personnel, it’s hard to take. In that changing room it will be as flat, I would say, an England changing room as I’ve ever been in,” Eoin Morgan wrote in his column for Sky Sports.

Recalling the disastrous campaign in the 2015 World Cup, Eoin Morgan further wrote: “That probably was at its lowest in Adelaide in 2015, when we were knocked out by Bangladesh, but there was a different level of expectation in that changing room. You were only expected to qualify for the quarter-final and you weren’t expected to compete for silverware.

“England came here with a level of expectation in the changing room, not just in the public, that they wanted to win this tournament. The next one is in 2027 and where probably eight or nine of these guys will not be here.

“They will be too old or they’ll be doing various different other things, with the majority of them retired. In English white-ball cricket there will be a huge sense of a missed opportunity because the quality in that changing room is hard to come by,” he added.
