Australian cricket team achieved unwanted records after they faced a massive 134-run loss against South Africa in the ICC World Cup 2023. The match took place at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow and the Pat Cummins-led side had no answers to the question put in by the Proteas.
With their 134-run loss against South Africa, Australia suffered their biggest loss in the World Cups. They surpassed their previous 118-run defeat against India in the 1983 World Cup. It was a torrid day for them as they were outshined in Lucknow.
Here are Australia’s biggest losses in World Cups
134 runs vs SA, Lucknow, 2023*
118 runs vs IND, Chelmsford, 1983
101 runs vs WI, Leeds, 1983
89 runs vs PAK, Nottingham, 1979
Apart from this, Australia for the first time since 1992 lost their first two World Cup matches. This was also the first time that they had lost 4 consecutive World Cup matches in the history of the game. Talking further, this was the 9th time in the last 11 games that they lost against South Africa.
Australia were poor with the ball as they couldn’t put pressure on the South African batters. They conceded 311 runs and then with the bat they looked clueless. Almost every batter failed as they were bundled out for just 177 runs. This was Australia’s third-lowest all-out total in World Cups.
Lowest all-out totals for Australia in WC in this century:
151 vs New Zealand, Auckland, 2015
176 vs Pakistan, Colombo (RPS), 2011
177 vs South Africa, Lucknow, 2023* (today)
199 vs India, Chennai, 2023* (previous match)
AUS vs SA: Everyone’s Hurting – Pat Cummins After Australia’s loss
Pat Cummins talked about the loss and expressed his disappointment, saying that they are hurt. He opened up about the areas they need to improve and added that they will come back stronger. He explained:
“I thought Quinton (de Kock) batted really well, couldn’t get a breakthrough. From where they were, we were quite happy with 310, thought it was chaseable. Looked like hard work out there tonight, their bowlers bowled really well, think it nipped around a bit more under lights. (On if it would’ve been easier to bat first) Really hard to say.
“If we want to be challenging in this tournament we need to find ways of performing regardless of batting first or second. Don’t think much needs to be said tonight, everyone’s hurting, we’ll try and take a couple of days off and then make amends to come back stronger in the next one. There’s a few things we need to tidy up.”
Australia will be next seen in action when they take on Sri Lanka on Monday (16th October).
