West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Shane Dowrich has taken the cricketing world by surprise with his sudden retirement from international cricket. Originally selected for the upcoming home ODIs against England, the 32-year-old has withdrawn from the squad, leaving the West Indies without an experienced wicketkeeper for the three-match series.
Super50 Cup Form Earns Recall
Dowrich earned his recall to the ODI squad based on his impressive performances in the Super50 Cup, where he amassed 234 runs in five innings at an average of 78 and a strike rate of 91.76. However, his previous ODI cap dates back to 2019 against Bangladesh, and the sudden retirement means Shai Hope will now have additional responsibilities in both captaincy and wicketkeeping.
While Dowrich’s ODI appearances were limited, he was a regular presence in Test cricket, playing 35 matches from June 2015 to December 2020. His contributions included 1570 runs, featuring three centuries, and 90 dismissals. Notably, Dowrich played a pivotal role in West Indies’ victory against England in 2019, scoring an outstanding Test century on home soil in Barbados.
CWI’s Tribute to Dowrich
Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, expressed gratitude for Dowrich’s contributions to West Indies cricket. “We want to thank Shane for his contribution when he played for West Indies. He is a disciplined, hard-working cricketer who always gave his utmost in front and behind the stumps,” said Bascombe. He acknowledged Dowrich’s memorable performances, including the Wisden Trophy win against England in 2019.
As Dowrich steps away from the international stage, cricket enthusiasts and officials alike extend their best wishes to the retiring wicketkeeper-batter. His decision to retire is respected, recognizing the challenges associated with such a significant life choice.
The void created by Dowrich’s departure will undoubtedly be felt as the team navigates future challenges without the experienced wicketkeeper-batter.
