Virender Sehwag Brutally Trolls Michael Vaughan After England’s Loss Against Afghanistan

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has taken a sly dig at Michael Vaughan after England suffered an embarrassing defeat against Afghanistan in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Afghanistan, on Sunday (October 15), pulled off one of the greatest upsets in the history of the World Cup as they stunned the reigning world champions by 69 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Batting first, Afghanistan scored 284 runs thanks to half-centuries from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ikram Alikhil.

The way Afghanistan started, it looked like they would post well in excess of 300 runs. Gurbaz came out all guns blazing and shared a 114-run stand with Ibrahim Zadran for the first wicket. He was dismissed for 80 off just 57 balls. Afghanistan failed to make the most of the solid start but still managed to post a good total thanks to another crucial fifty from Alikhil.

And the score turned out to be more than enough in the end as England were all out for 215 runs. England kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never really looked in contention to chase down the total. Barring Harry Brook’s 66 runs, there was no other substantial contribution with the bat from any other English player.

For Afghanistan, their spin trio made the difference with the ball. Player of the Match Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan picked up three wickets each while veteran allrounder Mohammad Nabi picked up two as Afghanistan registered their first win in the World Cup after 14 defeats in a row.

Virender Sehwag trolls Michael Vaughan:

As England suffered the embarrassing defeat, Michael Vaughan surprised one and all with his post on X (formerly Twitter). The former England skipper took to the social media platform to write “England in the World Cup semis..” followed by a string of raised-handed emojis.

Many believed that Michael Vaughan was predicting that England would go on to qualify for the semifinal despite the loss against Afghanistan and Virender Sehwag was also one of them. The India legend decided to have some fun at Michael Vaughan’s expense as he quickly reminded the latter of England’s poor record in the World Cup, writing:

“Not in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2023. Just one in 8 attempts.”

Well, Michael Vaughan’s post could be about England’s performance in the Rugby World Cup where they beat Fiji on Sunday to make it to the semifinal.
