IND vs SA: ‘Chokers Not But…’ – Venkatesh Prasad Opens Up On India’s Losses At ICC Knockouts

Venkatesh Prasad

Former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad, who is known to be very blunt and straightforward in his opinions, was recently asked that are the Indian team the new ‘chokers’ of international cricket.

The year 2023 was also not able to end India’s wait of not winning an ICC title as they lost in the final of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup. India have lost nine ICC knockout matches in the last ten years and won the last ICC title under the leadership of MS Dhoni. India defeated England in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Venkatesh Prasad Opens Up On India’s Losses At The ICC Knockouts

Venkatesh Prasad was asked by a fan on ‘X’ during a Q&A session, “Sir do you also think that Team India has become new chokers of world cricket ?? as we have just lost 10th consecutive ICC knockout in last 10 Years.”

Answering the question, Venkatesh Prasad stated that India are not ‘chokers’ as they have won two Test series in Australia in the last five years. He mentioned that he considered the last Test series win in Australia as the greatest as more than half of the first-choice players missing.

Venkatesh Prasad wrote, “Chokers not, we have won 2 Test series against Australia in Australia, the last one in 2020-21 after 36 all out, I consider as one of India’s greatest especially with more than half first choice players missing. But there is certainly something not right about not winning any major tournament in 11 years.”

India’s dismal run at the ICC knockouts started in the year 2014 when they lost to Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup final. The very next year, India were not able to defend their ODI World Cup title and faced a dominant loss against Australia in the semi-final.

Another major ICC knockout loss came to India’s doors in the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final following a loss against West Indies. India lost another ICC knockout match in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy against Pakistan and once again were not able to defend their title.

India then lost to New Zealand in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final and were not able to win an ICC title once again. Team India had a dismal run in the 2021 T20 World Cup whereas they faced a loss against New Zealand in the 2021 World Test Championship final. India lost yet another ICC knockout match and faced a defeat at the hands of England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final.

The Indian team will want to end its ICC title drought in the year 2024 when they play the T20 World Cup next year.
